Chief -- Bert Alexander
Bert was elected by the people of Port au Port May 9, 2002.
He was born in Auguathuna, Newfoundland and now resides with his wife Marie (nee Aucoin). They have two sons Timothy (wife Diana Vallee) with daughter Nicole and daughter Madisyn living in BC and Stephen (wife Amy Doucette) with son Jacob and daughter Jenesta living in the Yukon. Jacob and Jenesta attend native schools.
Bert's profession is that of an educator, his background includes corporate and human resource management area in both Canada and the US. He is a Certified Human Resource Consultant and holds several other professional designations. In 1981 was appointed a Notary Public for the Province of Newfoundland. He has written articles for several professional journals and magazines and writes regular columns on aboriginal issues in two newspapers in the province. He has been a serious researcher of the Mi'kmaq of Bay St. George for a number of years.
Saqamaq Bert's native ancestry includes: Alexander/L'Official, White, Benoit, Bernard, Doucet, Marche, Jesso and LeJeune. His wife Marie (Aucoin) has Mi'kmaq ancestry through Gallant, Marche, Doucet, Benoit/L'Official.
