Protecting Traditional Land

On November 21, 2002 Chief Alexander wrote the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Recreation, The Hon. Julie Bettney expressing some concerns the Ktaqamkuk Mi'kmaq Alliance was having regarding the moose population on the Port au Port Peninsula. Of major importance was the possibility that an outfitters license would be granted to some applicant without consideration of the position and concerns of the Alliance.

These lands are part of the traditional hunting territory of the Mi'kmaq and for the Alliance not to be involved in future development is not acceptable. There was no response to the Chief's correspondence so a follow-up letter was sent to the minister in early March expressing the concerns of the Alliance in very strong terms.

A letter dated March 27, 2003 has since been received from the Hon. Julie Bettney confirming that no outfitter's licenses would be granted by the Provincial Government in the immediate future and that a review of the area in question would be conducted in 2004. The KMA wants to insure that it be granted the first option for any outfitter's license granted on the Port au Port area or any other area within the boundaries of Mi'kmaq territorial lands.
