ANNOUNCEMENT -- Mi’kmaq Alliance Elects New Council

On Wednesday, June 27 the Ktaqamkuk Mi’kmaq Alliance held its fifth annual general meeting and election of band chief and council. The following members (see image) will serve for the next four years:
  • Bert Alexander–Chief
  • Greg Young–Vice-Chief
  • Dale Young-Secretary
  • Anne Hart-Treasurer
  • Glen Hinks–Director
  • Tony White–Director
  • Bernadine Daugherty–Youth Director
  • Mary Ann White, Vice-Chief Northern Peninsula
  • Darlene Gale, Vice-Chief BSG South
Elections for the Vice-Chiefs’ positions for the Northern Peninsula and Bay St. George South will be held in their respective areas. All candidates were elected by acclamation.

In his address to the membership, Chief Alexander presented highlights from the past year including an update on the class-action lawsuit against the federal and provincial governments, financial statements and developments in the areas of sports and recreation and economic development.

He also told the membership that there was a uniting of the Mi’kmaq people in the region especially in the area of economic development as a result of the formation of the Two Bays Mi’kmaq Economic Development Corporation, which represents all Mi’kmaq.

Chief Alexander concluded by stating that the Mi’kmaq people have come a long way in the past few years. Membership in the KMA and other bands continues to grow and the future looks good.
