Applying for Membership with the Ktaqamkuk (Taga-ma-goog) Mi'kmaq Alliance

The Ktaqamkuk (Taga-ma-goog) Mi'kmaq Alliance has been established to serve the needs of the Mi'kmaq people not only throughout the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, but those living outside the province who have become frustrated and angry over the way they have been treated by the Federation of Newfoundland Indians. Many of the people have been denied membership with the FNI.

The goal of the Mi'kmaq Alliance is to promote and foster the cultural, economic, social and educational best interests of its members and it is presently accepting applications from all individuals who meet the prescribed criteria for membership.

The Mi'kmaq Alliance has opened its boundaries to the people of the entire province of Newfoundland and Labrador outside of Conne River. The Alliance welcomes applications for membership from those people living outside of the province. It will encourage membership and will assist qualified individuals to join and take an active part in the aboriginal movement. KMA believes that membership in a Mi'kmaq band or organization is a birthright not a privilege.

The newly formed Mi'kmaq Alliance is providing an option that Mi'kmaq people have not had in the past. Individuals living outside the province will also be eligible to become members upon submission of documented evidence linking them to Mi'kmaq ancestry in Newfoundland. Over the years many Newfoundland Mi'kmaq were forced to leave their homeland not only because of poor economic conditions but also because of the stigma attached to them of being Indian which made it even more difficult for them to find employment locally. The Mi'kmaq Alliance respects the rights of these individuals to be included.

How do I apply?
  1. Download and print a copy of our Application Form. Be sure to include your correct mailing address, phone number and e-mail address if you have one. Also include information for your minor children. Adult children must apply with thier own application, but can be included in your application package to cut down on photo copies.

  2. Include with your application copies of baptism or long form birth certificates, marriage certificates and family information. If the records do not show this information you may apply to the church where the person was baptized for a corrected record, or to the Department of Vital Statistics in the province where the person was born. You must ask for a "long form birth certificate" showing the parents. Certificates that have parents written in by the applicant will not be accepted.

  3. Include with your application all birth documents and marriage records along with two wallet size photos. (The size of the picture on your drivers license) Registration fees must be included with the applications for processing. Please do not send cash in the mail. Money orders and certified checks made payable to Ktaqamkuk Mi'kmaq Alliance are acceptable forms of payment.
Please note:

Becoming a member of the Ktaqamkuk (Taga-ma-goog) Mi'kmaq Alliance does not automatically give the applicant Indian Status. It is the intention of the KMA to negotiate registration and other benefits with Indian and Northern Affairs. You will be certifying that your information is correct and you fully understand that the mission and objective of the Kataqamkuk Mi'kmaq Alliance is to seek full status under the Indian Act of Canada so as to secure benefits equal to other First Nation's Bands in Newfoundland and in other parts of Canada regardless of where you live. You will be supporting the Alliance and its leadership in this endeavor.
