[Atlantic Canada Coleoptera]
Christopher Majka: Coleoptera Publications & Research
Some recent scientific publications by Christopher Majka, research associate of the Nova Scotia Museum in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is also a Subject Editor for ZooKeys; a Review Editor for The Coleopterists Bulletin; an Associate Editor for The Journal of the Acadian Entomological Association, and one of the Coleoptera Editors for BugGuide.
Advocacy articles on the environment, climate change, political reform, and arts and culture issues by Christopher Majka are available [Here.]
For those interested in Canadian Coleoptera, I recommend the books, Biodiversity, Biosystematics, and Ecology of Canadian Coleoptera I, and Biodiversity, Biosystematics, and Ecology of Canadian Coleoptera II published as a special editions of the journal ZooKeys. With a combined 27 research papers on the biodiversity, biosystematics, and ecology of Canadian Coleoptera, a historical review of scientific research on Coleoptera in Canada, and survey of biodiversity research in the era of information technology, they are valuable compilation of information of interest to entomologists, ecologists, biogeographers, and conservationists.
I similarly recommend our recent publication Checklist of the Beetles of Maine, USA
This 328 page checklist of the beetles (Coleoptera) of Maine provides the first comprehensive listing of the 2,871 beetles (2,466 native Nearctic species, 121 native Holarctic species, and 284 introduced species) recorded in the state of Maine, USA. Four hundred and seventeen are newly recorded in Maine while 58 are herein excluded from the state faunal list. For each species a chronological listing includes studies that have recorded it in Maine, and its distribution in the states and provinces of northeastern North America. Full collection data of all specimens for each newly recorded species are included. Recent synonymies and points of particular relevance are indicated in endnotes.
For each of the 96 families of Coleoptera, an introductory section discusses bionomics, taxonomic status, previous compilations of information, and the principal reference works that apply to the North American fauna. A photograph of a selected representative is also included. An introductory chapter recounts the history of Coleoptera research in Maine, while a second chapter presents a preliminary overview and analysis of the Maine beetle fauna. References to 1,171 publications that pertain to the Maine beetle fauna are provided, as is a table of contents. The index includes 1,940 supra-specific names of included taxa.
The book can be ordered from Empty Mirrors Press
The Canadian beetle fauna has been the subject of investigation for almost two centuries. Rev. Charles J.S. Bethune, Gustave Chagnon, Philip H. Gosse, W. Hague Harrington, William Kirby, and l'abbé Léon Provancher are just a few of the prominent entomologists who made important early contributions to its knowledge. The 1991 national compendium, "Checklist of the Beetles of Canada and Alaska," recorded 7,436 species in Canada and many others have subsequently been added or described. The past two decades have seen an explosion of interest in Coleoptera, with many studies on taxonomy, biodiversity, zoogeography, distribution, ecology, and adventive species having been published.
Over the past decade, with the assistance of many colleagues, I have been engaged in a large number of studies to investigate the ecology, bionomics, biodiversity, and biosystematics of beetles of Atlantic Canada. In Nova Scotia we have documented 2,392 species, an increase of 1,046 species since 1991; in Prince Edward Island we now have records of 946 species, an increase of 617 species; in New Brunswick there are records of 2,226 species, an increase of 845 species since 1991. The current total of beetles found in the Maritime Provinces is 2,877 species while in the neighbouring state of Maine we have recorded 2,871 species.
Nevertheless, many groups require taxonomic revision and basic parameters of the distribution, dispersal, zoogeographic status, phenology, and bionomics of many species have yet to be understood. The answers to these questions have important economic and environmental repercussions. Many beetles play prominent roles in forestry and agricultural, sometimes as beneficial species, at other times as pests. In an era of concern with regard to invasive species, pollution, and climate change, the possibility of employing Coleoptera as indicators of ecological change is being investigated. For all these reasons we need to develop our knowledge of this important group of Canadian invertebrates. The papers below are a small contribution to this effort.
